About

Matt is the Director of Virtual Economics. He is also the Deputy Director of theDevelopment Policy Centre. Before joining the Crawford School he was the head of economics for the UK aid program in India and has fifteen years experience as a professional economist.

Matt has carried out research on aid and development, and provided economic advice for the Australian, Papua New Guinea and UK governments in Africa, Asia and the Pacific. He has a Masters degree in Development Economics from the University of Sussex, started his career as a research assistant at the Institute of Development Studies and was an ODI Fellow in PNG.

Matt is currently carrying out research on aid effectiveness, with a focus on the Australian aid program. He is also examining broader development policies, including how to manage mineral booms in fragile states and the role of regional labour mobility in development.

Matt is a keen blogger and writes for the Development Policy blog and Virtual Economics, and he can also be found on Twitter.

Matt also provides support to the Aid Policy course at the Crawford School.
